Full text of the Press Release in conjunction with the Cheque
Presentation ceremony on 24 Oct 2005 at the Bilik Delima, 53rd floor
KOMTAR Tower:
The Penang Chess Association (PCA) is pleased to announce that
the
Penang International Open Chess Championship will be organised in conjunction
with Pesta Pulau Pinang on 7 – 11 Dec 2005.
This will be the PCA’s flagship tournament of the year and a total prize fund
of RM19500 will be made available to the winnin participants who are expected
from around the country and also overseas.
The two main objectives of this championship are:
- To present an opportunity to the members of the PCA to play against
internationally rated chess players and gain international ratings of
their own; and
- To present the members with an opportunity to gain the experience of
playing competitive chess under proper guidance and international chess
rules.
Today’s Cheque Presentation ceremony will bring together five sponsors who
are generously contributing to make the Penang International Open Chess
Championship a success:
- Our Platinum Sponsors are the Wah Seong Group and Hwang-DBS
(Malaysia) Berhad, two eminent companies that are listed on the Bursa
Malaysia. Our Platinum Sponsors are sponsoring RM20,000 each to the
championship.
- Our Gold Sponsors are Evergreen Marine Corporation Sdn Bhd,
JobStreet Corporation Berhad and Tourism Penang. Both Evergreen Marine
Corporation and Tourism Penang are sponsoring RM3,000 each, while
JobStreet Corporation as the PCA’s email sponsor is publicising the
championship to their 500,000-strong JobStreet members in Malaysia.
About the Penang Chess Association:
The PCA was founded in 1972, making us the oldest established chess
organisation in Malaysia. In the 33-year history of the PCA, the association
has organised several international-level chess competitions such as the
inaugural Asian Team Chess Championship in 1974, the Malaysian leg of the
First Grandmaster Chess Circuit in 1978, the Asian Cities Team Championship
in 1982, the Asian Team Chess Championship again in 1991, the Canggih
Penang International Open Chess Championship in 1997 and the Wah Seong
International Master Chess Tournament in 2000.
The PCA has produced many national chess champions in Jimmy Liew, Tan Bian
Huat, Goh Yoon Wah, Yeoh Chin Seng, Ng Tze Han, Jonathan Chuah and Lim Chuin
Hoong. In addition, the PCA continues to work with the Malaysian Chess
Federation to provide opportunities to many Penang chess players to take part
in international chess competitions and gain experience.
